Expedition Events have become one of the most recognizable and frequently repeated systems in Gardenscapes. To many newer players, they may seem as though they have always been part of the game: a separate map covered in fog, obstacles removed with energy, main missions, secondary collections, hidden objects, gates, treasures, and a story that develops as the exploration continues.

In reality, Gardenscapes did not begin with expeditions. The current system was created gradually through experiments that began in 2020, returned in 2021, and developed into a regular series of expeditions from 2022 onward. By July 2026, more than sixty different expeditions or early versions of them had been recorded.

The Short Answer: When Did the First Expedition Appear?

The earliest known form of an Expedition Event in Gardenscapes appeared in early August 2020 and was called Austin’s Adventures. The related game update, version 4.6.0, was released on July 29, 2020, and announced that players would begin a treasure hunt with Austin in early August.

The update description mentioned two basic features that later became the foundation of every expedition: players would complete regular levels to earn energy and then use that energy to complete missions and explore new areas.

The safest historical conclusion is therefore that Expedition Events began as an experimental adventure event in August 2020. No official announcement has been found confirming one specific worldwide activation date for every account. The update was published on July 29, and the event was expected to begin during the first days of August.

This distinction matters because events do not always appear in the same way for every player. Playrix uses gradual releases, different game versions, and test groups, which means that a feature may first appear for a limited number of accounts before reaching the wider player base.

Austin’s Adventures: The Ancestor of Modern Expeditions

Austin’s Adventures was introduced as a separate treasure hunt. Austin temporarily left his usual garden duties and entered an independent adventure where progress was made with energy rather than stars.

This represented a major change in the structure of Gardenscapes. Until then, most limited-time events had focused on decorations, special currencies, temporary rooms, collecting objects inside levels, or ranking competitions. Austin’s Adventures added something different: a second gameplay space with its own movement, missions, and exploration.

The basic structure was already recognizable:

  • the player completed match-3 levels,
  • received special energy,
  • used that energy on a separate map,
  • removed obstacles and opened new paths,
  • completed missions that advanced the story.

However, the 2020 event was not immediately followed by a stable monthly series. After the first experiment, a long period passed without a similar expedition. This suggests that Playrix was probably evaluating participation, duration, energy consumption, and how effectively exploration could be connected to the main match-3 game.

2021: Investigation in the Park and the Return of the Idea

The next major appearance was recorded during the summer of 2021 with Investigation in the Park. Update descriptions from that period mentioned an investigation in a park, a mystery involving a Sphinx, and the exploration of abandoned areas.

Investigation in the Park appears in historical records in August and again in September 2021. The two references may be connected to different release phases, a repeated version, testing among different player groups, or different timing across platforms.

Compared with Austin’s Adventures, the 2021 event felt more like a mystery investigation. Exploration was not used only as a way to move around a map. It became a storytelling device through which the player searched for clues, opened hidden locations, and helped the characters solve a case.

This became the narrative model followed by later expeditions. Most expeditions are not limited to searching for treasure. They usually involve disappearances, ancient mysteries, crimes, family secrets, supernatural threats, dangerous journeys, or rescue missions.

2022: The Beginning of the Regular Expedition Era

Although the first experiment appeared in 2020, 2022 was the year in which expeditions began to take the form of a regular event category. At least five major expeditions appeared during the year, each with its own title and theme.

Ancient Riddles Expedition – February 2022

The Ancient Riddles Expedition brought Austin and Rachel into an adventure involving ancient riddles and a mysterious object. Updates from the period described an exciting mission scheduled for the middle of February.

This expedition is important because it is considered the first entry in the continuous modern series. From this point onward, expeditions began appearing more frequently, with larger maps and a clearer distinction between the main story and optional exploration.

Mysteries of the North – May 2022

In Mysteries of the North, Austin and Rachel traveled toward northern Europe to investigate a mystery. The expedition combined frozen landscapes, ancient remains, and the search for important objects.

The title returned in a new version in September 2025, showing that Playrix does not necessarily treat every expedition name as a unique and permanent event. A title, musical theme, or basic environment can be reused with a different story and a different reward structure.

Tortuga Expedition – July 2022

The Tortuga Expedition moved the adventure into a pirate setting. Players explored tropical areas, searched for treasure, and followed a story involving pirates, lost maps, and dangerous routes.

Midnight Terror – October 2022

Midnight Terror was the Halloween expedition. It used a dark atmosphere, supernatural elements, and mystery, proving that the system could be adapted to seasonal themes without changing its basic mechanics.

Yeti Expedition – November 2022

The Yeti Expedition sent the characters into snowy mountains to search for the mythical Yeti. The adventure reinforced the model of exploring isolated landscapes filled with snowstorms, mountain obstacles, and rescue missions.

2023: From an Occasional Event to a Permanent System

In 2023, expeditions became an almost continuous presence. Ten major or smaller expeditions were recorded, covering different continents, historical periods, and styles of storytelling.

  1. Ancient Egypt Expedition – January 2023: pyramids, ancient tombs, desert landscapes, and an Egyptian mystery.
  2. Botanical Expedition – February 2023: dangerous plants, botanical secrets, and an investigation in nature.
  3. Mansion Expedition – April 2023: exploration of a mansion containing hidden rooms and family secrets.
  4. Klondike Expedition – May 2023: a journey through a cold region inspired by the gold rush era.
  5. Shambala Expedition – June 2023: the search for a legendary and isolated location.
  6. Expedition to Greece – August 2023: Greek landscapes, archaeological elements, and references to mythology.
  7. Wasp Queen Expedition – September 2023: danger from insects and an adventure with a stronger survival theme.
  8. Sea Monster Mysteries – October 2023: a short seven-day expedition involving a maritime mystery.
  9. Top Secret Expedition – November 2023: espionage, a classified mission, and a conspiracy.
  10. Santa’s Trials – December 2023: a Christmas adventure involving Santa Claus and a series of trials.

During this period, larger maps also became standard. Players did not always have to follow only the main path. They could take alternative routes to find collectible objects, hidden energy, coins, boosters, or gates that required keys.

These choices created a constant resource-management dilemma. Players had to decide whether to follow only the main story or spend additional energy on secondary collections. The same logic is connected to the wider decision of when to push harder in an event and when to protect your coins.

How the Basic Expedition Mechanics Work

Expeditions take place in a separate location away from the main garden. Players enter the map through the event icon and initially see only a small part of the area. The rest is covered in fog or locked behind obstacles.

To progress, the player selects objects such as bushes, rocks, logs, ice, crates, or other obstacles. Each object requires a specific amount of energy. Once it is removed, a new part of the route becomes accessible.

Energy is obtained mainly in four ways:

  • by completing regular, Hard, and Super Hard levels,
  • through free regeneration over time,
  • by collecting containers or other energy sources on the map,
  • by purchasing energy with coins or through special offers.

In many versions, regular levels provide less energy, while Hard, Super Hard, and Challenge levels provide larger amounts. The exact values do not remain permanently fixed and may vary by period or player group.

Main Story

The main story consists of a sequence of missions. Players must reach specific locations, find characters, collect objects, repair mechanisms, or overcome a threat. Completing these missions unlocks new dialogue scenes and advances the plot.

Secondary Collections

Alongside the main story, expeditions include collections of special objects. A collection may require plants, animals, archaeological discoveries, tools, photographs, statues, gemstones, or other items connected to the expedition’s theme.

These objects are usually found along routes that branch away from the main path. As a result, completing an entire collection requires considerably more energy than simply finishing the story.

Secret Gates

Secret Gates are locked areas opened with special keys hidden throughout the map. Behind them, players may find coins, energy, unlimited lives, and boosters.

Some gates are positioned close to the main route, while others are completely optional. Their value depends on how much energy the player must spend to reach them compared with the rewards found inside.

Gemstone Fever

Gemstone Fever became closely connected to expeditions. Players collect special gemstones by removing obstacles and complete a sequence of reward stages. Many intermediate rewards return energy, allowing exploration to continue.

Players often remember older versions as providing larger amounts of energy and stronger reward packages. Over time, complaints appeared that requirements had increased or that some rewards had been reduced.

2024: The Major Acceleration

In 2024, the frequency of expeditions increased dramatically. Eighteen expeditions were recorded within a single year, including several shorter events lasting approximately seven to eleven days.

  1. Welcome to El Dorado – January 2024: a short search for the legendary golden city.
  2. Magical Expedition – January 2024: magic, mysterious objects, and a fantasy environment.
  3. Expedition to Egypt – February 2024: a short return to the Egyptian theme.
  4. Survival Game – March 2024: a survival adventure with a stronger sense of danger.
  5. Adventure to Greece – March 2024: a smaller Greek expedition.
  6. The Case of a Mythical Hound – April 2024: a detective mystery based on the legend of a mythical hound.
  7. Witches’ Valley – May 2024: a short supernatural story set in a valley of witches.
  8. Ocean’s Heart – May 2024: a maritime adventure and the search for a valuable object.
  9. Snow Queen – June 2024: a short frozen expedition inspired by fairy-tale themes.
  10. Alien Invasion – July 2024: an alien invasion with science-fiction elements.
  11. Chocolate Show – July 2024: a mystery set during a themed chocolate competition.
  12. Kidnapping Case – August 2024: a kidnapping investigation and rescue mission.
  13. Wild Wild West – September 2024: a Western setting featuring canyons, railroads, and outlaws.
  14. Secret of the Flair Witch – October 2024: a Halloween story involving magic and hidden secrets.
  15. Search for Atlantis – October 2024: the search for the lost city of Atlantis.
  16. Thanksgiving Day – November 2024: an adventure with an American holiday theme.
  17. Smart Garden – December 2024: technology, automation, and an unusual garden.
  18. Undercover Agent – December 2024: an espionage mission involving a secret identity.

The increase in frequency shows that the system had become an important tool for maintaining daily player activity. An expedition can last for many days and require the continuous completion of levels, connecting the temporary story with progress in the main game.

2025: Expeditions Become the Dominant Major Event Format

In 2025, expeditions began covering almost the entire event calendar. Older room renovations, large decoration events, and several traditional competitions appeared less frequently, while one exploration map followed another.

  1. Ancient Desert – January 2025: ancient secrets hidden in a desert.
  2. Valentine’s Day – February 2025: a romantic expedition.
  3. Save the Penguins – February 2025: a mission to rescue penguins.
  4. Bastet’s Treasure – March 2025: an Egyptian treasure connected to the goddess Bastet.
  5. Lost in the Snow – April 2025: characters trapped in a snowy region.
  6. Perilous Prairie – April 2025: a dangerous journey through plains, a town, and a railway route.
  7. Dangerous Flora – May 2025: aggressive or mutated plants.
  8. The Tangled Case – June 2025: a complicated case with numerous twists.
  9. Treasures of Camelot – July 2025: a search for Excalibur involving the legends of Camelot.
  10. Mystery of the Red Queen – July 2025: a fantasy mystery involving the Red Queen.
  11. Lost Island – August 2025: the exploration of an isolated island.
  12. Temple of Living Water – September 2025: an unknown civilization and the Temple of Living Water.
  13. Mysteries of the North – September 2025: a new use of the northern theme.
  14. Legends of Transylvania – October 2025: vampires, castles, and legends from Transylvania.
  15. Scourge of the Seas – November 2025: a pirate threat and maritime action.
  16. A Puzzling Inheritance – November 2025: a mysterious inheritance and a family puzzle.
  17. Christmas with the Parents – December 2025: a journey through a snowstorm for a family celebration.

At the same time, discussions about expedition economics increased within player communities. Many players began comparing older and newer maps, reporting fewer boosters, smaller energy returns, more expensive obstacles, and greater distances between collectible objects.

This experience explains why some players stop after completing the main story and do not attempt to clear the entire map. When the required energy becomes greater than the value of the remaining rewards, the event may no longer be worth the additional effort.

2026: The Story Continues

By the middle of July 2026, the following expeditions had been recorded:

  1. Athena’s Tear – January 2026: Greek mythology and the search for an ancient object.
  2. Great Plains Adventure – January 2026: plains, a town, a canyon, and railway tracks.
  3. Myth Busters – February 2026: an investigation at a mountain lodge and an attempt to stop a criminal.
  4. Sands of Oblivion – March 2026: a journey through a desert, mines, and an ancient temple in search of an antidote.
  5. Smuggler Island – April 2026: the rescue of Balthazar and an escape from an island controlled by smugglers.
  6. Race Against the Elements – April 2026: a mission involving extreme natural conditions.
  7. Cold Peak – May 2026: a dangerous mission on a frozen mountain peak.
  8. Case of the Golden Statue – June 2026: an attempt to prove Rachel’s innocence after she is accused of stealing a golden statue.
  9. Deadly Detour – June 2026: a dangerous diversion filled with traps and unexpected developments.
  10. Prisoners of Bear Mountain – July 2026: a rescue mission in a mountainous region and the most recently recorded expedition at the time this history was written.

How Many Expeditions Have There Been?

By counting Austin’s Adventures from 2020, the two recorded appearances of Investigation in the Park, and every later named expedition, the historical list reaches at least 63 recorded appearances by July 2026.

This number must be interpreted carefully. It does not necessarily mean that there were 63 completely different mechanics or 63 entirely unique maps. Some events:

  • reused older titles,
  • were released in more than one phase,
  • shared music or environmental elements,
  • were shorter versions of larger expeditions,
  • may have appeared only for specific groups of players.

In addition, the name seen by a player may differ slightly depending on the language of the game. A title may appear in English as an Expedition, Adventure, Case, Mystery, or Survival Game even though it mechanically belongs to the same family of events.

How the Rewards Changed

In the earliest expeditions, exploration was presented more as a new gameplay experience than as a strictly calculated economy. Over time, more reward systems were added:

  • intermediate gifts for completing chapters,
  • a major prize for completing the main story,
  • separate collection rewards,
  • keys and Secret Gates,
  • Gemstone Fever,
  • temporary leaderboard events,
  • unique decorations, avatars, or profile titles.

At the same time, Playrix could adjust energy consumption in several ways: increasing obstacle costs, making routes longer, placing collectible objects farther away from the main story, or reducing the energy returned by connected events.

For this reason, the real difficulty of an expedition is not determined only by the length of its story. It is determined by the overall balance between the energy earned and the energy required to clear the map.

Why Expeditions Replaced Many Older Events

Expeditions offer Playrix more possibilities than a simple leaderboard or item-collection event. They can combine:

  • storytelling and characters,
  • daily returns to the game,
  • completion of match-3 levels,
  • coin consumption,
  • collections and optional objectives,
  • offers involving the purchase of energy,
  • rewards that require participation over several days.

A simple event may end as soon as a player reaches a specific number of points. An expedition constantly creates smaller objectives: opening the next section of the map, reaching an object, completing a chapter, or finding the final item in a collection.

This makes progress feel continuous even when the player is still far from the final reward. At the same time, it allows the game to provide different versions or reward structures without changing the basic mechanics.

Community Reactions

Expeditions have received mixed reactions on Facebook, Reddit, and YouTube. Many players enjoy the maps, environments, and stories because they offer something different from the constant repetition of match-3 levels.

Other players believe that the system has become too frequent. Communities repeatedly ask why older renovation events, photo album challenges, and different competitions have declined while almost every major update includes another expedition.

The most common complaints involve:

  • high energy costs in the final sections,
  • collection objects scattered across distant locations,
  • reduced rewards compared with older maps,
  • the removal or reduction of certain treasures,
  • the need to complete a very large number of levels,
  • the difficulty of fully clearing a map without purchasing energy.

Some players prefer to complete only the main plot and leave the collections unfinished. Others clear every available side route before continuing so that they do not have to return to an earlier section of the map later.

What Is Considered the Real Beginning?

The answer depends on what we mean when we say that expeditions “began.”

  • August 2020: the first known experimental format with Austin’s Adventures.
  • August–September 2021: the return and development of the idea with Investigation in the Park.
  • February 2022: the beginning of the continuous modern series with the Ancient Riddles Expedition.
  • 2023–2024: the transformation of expeditions into a regular, almost permanent system.
  • 2025–2026: their establishment as the dominant form of major narrative event.

Historically, Gardenscapes Expedition Events were therefore born in August 2020, but the era of continuous expeditions effectively began in February 2022.

Conclusion

Expeditions were not part of the original Gardenscapes released in 2016. They were added four years later when Playrix tested Austin’s Adventures as a new type of event connecting match-3 levels with an independent exploration map.

The first experiment did not immediately lead to a permanent series. The system had to return in 2021, followed by the new generation of expeditions in 2022, before the format known today was established.

Since then, the system has expanded from an occasional adventure into a central part of Gardenscapes. Maps became larger, stories became more frequent, collections became more complicated, and energy management became increasingly important.

By July 2026, the history of expeditions covered approximately six years of development and more than sixty recorded appearances. The complete list is now an important part of the historical archive of Gardenscapes changes because it records not only the names of the expeditions but also the gradual transformation of the entire event system.
