How does the Safe work in Gardenscapes? Discover how to open it, collect the diamond, and use explosions and matches efficiently as it falls.
The Safe protects a diamond. Clearing it takes two steps: opening the safe and collecting what's inside. Both can happen in a single move if successive explosions hit the safe and then the revealed diamond.
What Is It, and What Does It Look Like on the Board?
The element's official name is Safe. It occupies one tile and prevents you from collecting the diamond right away. Its tile cannot hold a regular colored piece, so large groups of Safes leave less room to make matches.
The Safe has two distinct appearances. When closed, it looks like a square safe with rounded corners, a blue-purple frame, and a light-colored door with a keyhole in the center and hinges on the right. Once it opens, the door disappears, revealing a large, faceted, bright fuchsia diamond inside the same frame.
How Does It Work?
The Closed Safe
Regular matches next to a closed Safe will not open it. You need a power-up explosion or a tool that can hit it.
The Revealed Diamond
Once the Safe opens, you can collect the diamond with an adjacent match or an explosion. You do not necessarily need another power-up at this stage.
Multiple Explosions in One Move
A chain reaction can handle both stages without requiring another move. The Safe opens after the first explosion, and a later explosion can collect the exposed diamond. There is no required wait between the two stages.
That does not mean every power-up combination will clear it completely. The result depends on the area each explosion covers and where the element is when each explosion goes off.
How Many Hits Does It Take?
The Safe takes two hits in total: one to open it and one to collect the diamond. Only after the diamond is collected does the element disappear from the board.
Does It Fall or Stay in Place?
The Safe falls when the tiles beneath it are cleared. As you clear the board, it can drop to a different position, changing how you can reach it. Falling does not open the Safe or collect the diamond.
Why Does It Make a Level Harder?
The main challenge is the combination of limited space and the need for explosions. You may have matches available around the Safes but no easy way to create a useful power-up or get one within range.
When several Safes are grouped together, they leave fewer tiles for colored pieces and fewer opportunities to create power-ups. That grouping can also work in your favor, though: an explosion with the right coverage can hit several targets.
Isolated Safes often require a more careful approach. Their location matters more than their number, especially when other obstacles limit access. Counting the Safes alone therefore will not tell you how many moves you need to clear them.
Because the element falls, you should not treat it as a permanent wall.
Practical Strategy
- Check the power-ups already on the board. If they can hit the closed Safes, consider your options before spending moves to create new ones.
- Anticipate where the Safes will fall. Clearing beneath them can bring them closer to a useful explosion or move them out of its range.
- Look for coverage that serves several targets. Favor explosions that hit multiple Safes and advance other level objectives.
- Create an explosive with a specific purpose. Its value depends on whether it can reach the target, not simply on whether you can make it.
- Reassess your options once a Safe opens. An available adjacent match may collect the diamond with fewer moves than setting up another power-up.
On a crowded board, a setup move is worthwhile when it directly improves access or advances another required objective. Repeated matches next to a closed Safe that do neither use up moves without unlocking it.
For New Players
What to remember: the closed door needs an explosive hit; the exposed diamond can be collected with a regular match.
What to consider first: check whether an available power-up can reach the Safe. If none can, look for a match that creates a useful explosive or opens access to that part of the board.
The mistake to avoid: making adjacent matches just because they are available. Without a clear setup benefit, they waste moves while leaving the Safe locked.
Safe Gameplay
Conclusion
Clearing the Safe efficiently comes down to access: where it is, where it will fall, and which explosions can reach it. Make the most of opportunities to hit several targets at once, and avoid setting up new explosives when an available match can already collect the diamond.
Once the door opens, the hard part may already be over. Take the diamond with a simple match if you can—the next locked Safe can have the fireworks.
