Why does Gardenscapes now require age verification in Brazil? Here is how the new 18+ access rule works, why Playrix introduced it, and what players need to know about k-ID.
Gardenscapes players in Brazil are now being asked to prove they are over 18 before they can enter the game. This is not a new worldwide age rating for Gardenscapes. It is a Brazil-specific access requirement tied to the country’s new online-safety rules.
The change is part of a broader push to make online services safer for younger users. Playrix already has rules for player-created content in areas such as team chat, usernames, and team names, but the Brazilian requirement goes much further because it can determine whether a player gets into the game at all.
What Is Changing for Players in Brazil?
When affected players open Gardenscapes, they will see a prompt asking them to confirm their age.
According to Playrix, Gardenscapes will be accessible in Brazil only to players who have confirmed that they are over 18. Anyone who cannot complete the verification will not be able to continue into the game.
This is more than the usual birthday question seen in many games and apps. Players are not simply being asked to enter a date of birth. Playrix is using an age-assurance service designed to determine whether a person actually falls into the required age group.
Why Is Playrix Doing This?
The change comes as Brazil implements the Digital Statute for Children and Adolescents, commonly known as ECA Digital.
Brazil enacted Law No. 15,211 on September 17, 2025. The law took effect on March 17, 2026 and introduced new protections for children and teenagers using digital products and services.
Those rules are not limited to social media. They also cover digital services such as apps, video platforms, app stores, operating systems, and electronic games when children and teenagers are likely to use them.
Brazil’s National Data Protection Agency, the ANPD, has also issued guidance on reliable age-assurance systems. The goal is to move beyond simply asking users how old they are and toward methods that provide stronger evidence of their age category.
Did Brazil Make Gardenscapes an 18+ Game?
No. That would be an oversimplification.
ECA Digital created new obligations for digital services that may be used by children and teenagers. It did not specifically declare Gardenscapes an adults-only game.
Playrix still states in its general age-policy information that its games are suitable for ages three and up, while individual recommended age ratings are displayed through platforms such as Google Play and the App Store.
The Brazilian change is better understood as an access requirement. Under Playrix’s current system, a player in Brazil must confirm that they are over 18 before being allowed into Gardenscapes.
Playrix has not publicly explained why it chose this approach instead of offering a separate version of the game for younger Brazilian players. What the company has made clear is the result: if the system cannot confirm that a player is over 18, that player cannot access the game.
Why Would a Match-3 Game Need Age Verification?
Gardenscapes may be built around match-3 levels, but the modern game is more than a puzzle board. It includes player accounts, purchases, teams, chat, events, competitions, and online services that connect different parts of the game.
That matters when governments introduce rules designed to protect younger users. Communication between players, personal data, commercial features, and account systems can all create additional safety and privacy requirements.
ECA Digital specifically includes electronic games within its broader digital-safety framework. A game does not need adult content to be affected by rules concerning children, privacy, age assurance, or online interaction.
How Does Gardenscapes Verify Your Age?
Playrix is using k-ID, a third-party age-assurance service, to handle the verification process.
The options available to a player may vary, but Playrix lists three possible methods:
- Face Scan: a selfie video is used to estimate the player’s age.
- Photo ID Scan: the player uses a government-issued ID and scans both the front and back of the document.
- AgeKey: the player verifies their age once and can reuse that verification across supported services without repeatedly sharing identity documents.
The purpose is to establish an age category rather than simply accept whatever birthday a player enters.
Does Playrix See Your Selfie?
According to Playrix, no.
For the face-scan method, Playrix says the process takes place on the player’s device and that neither Playrix nor k-ID receives or sees the selfie. Playrix also says the facial information used for the check does not leave the device.
Playrix states that it does not store the information provided to prove a player’s age and that the verification information is deleted once the age category has been confirmed.
That distinction matters because Gardenscapes players already deal with other account and data issues that are completely separate from age verification. For example, account data removal involves a different process and should not be confused with submitting information through k-ID to confirm an age category.
What If the Verification Does Not Work?
A failed attempt does not necessarily mean the player is permanently locked out.
Playrix says players can try again, although the number of attempts allowed for a particular verification method may be limited. They can also switch methods. Someone who cannot complete the face scan, for example, may be able to use a government-issued ID instead.
If a player is over 18 but the system returns the wrong result, Playrix says to contact the Gardenscapes support team at gardenscapes@playrix.com. The company also points players to k-ID’s support resources for problems involving the verification service itself.
Why Is This Happening Now?
The timing lines up with Brazil’s rollout of ECA Digital.
The law took effect in March 2026, and the ANPD has been introducing and monitoring age-assurance requirements in stages. Its published timeline includes an adaptation and monitoring period running from August through November 2026.
Playrix has not said that one specific ANPD deadline directly triggered the new Gardenscapes requirement, so there is no reason to claim that it did. What is clear is that the change has arrived while Brazil is actively implementing and monitoring its new age-assurance framework.
Is This Happening Everywhere?
No. Playrix’s announcement specifically refers to Brazil.
There is currently nothing in the notice saying that every Gardenscapes player worldwide must prove they are over 18.
Online-safety laws are developing differently from country to country, which means the same game may not always operate exactly the same way everywhere. Regional regulations can affect access, communication features, privacy systems, and the way companies handle younger users.
That does not mean Brazil’s verification system will automatically be introduced elsewhere. Unless Playrix announces additional countries, the 18+ requirement should be treated as specific to Brazil.
What If You Are Over 18 but Still Cannot Get Into the Game?
If the system gives an incorrect result, trying another verification method is the most practical first step. If that still does not work, Playrix recommends contacting Support.
Players should keep their Player ID, screenshots of the error, and any other useful details before reaching out. Because the support process can differ depending on the device, knowing how Gardenscapes Support works can make it easier to send the issue through the right channel with the information Playrix needs.
What If You Cannot Confirm That You Are Over 18?
Playrix’s current policy is straightforward: without successful confirmation that the player is over 18, Gardenscapes cannot be accessed in Brazil.
For an adult who passes the check, this may amount to a one-time verification before returning to the game. For someone who cannot meet the requirement, however, it becomes a real barrier to access.
Conclusion
Gardenscapes has not suddenly become an adults-only game worldwide. The change is specific to Brazil, where new online-safety rules have created stronger requirements around age assurance and the protection of children and teenagers online.
Playrix is responding by requiring Brazilian players to confirm that they are over 18 through k-ID. Depending on what is available, that may involve a face scan, government-issued ID, or AgeKey.
The bigger story is that online-safety laws are starting to affect the way players actually enter and use games. In Brazil, age verification is no longer just another privacy notice. It has become part of the front door to Gardenscapes.
