Jam: Gardenscapes’ New Element and the Secret to Spreading It

Two Gardenscapes workers paint faded mansion walls with rollers coated in glossy purple Jam, leaving thick drips running down the walls.

You combine two Super Rainbow Blasts, watch the entire board clear, and expect everything to turn purple. But when the effects stop, the Jam hasn’t budged. Why didn’t it spread? Gardenscapes’ new element has a detail that’s easy to miss: where the power-ups are when you combine them matters.

What Is Jam?

Why doesn’t Jam spread when you combine two Super Rainbow Blasts? See how this Gardenscapes element works and why power-up placement matters.

Jam is a spreading element that forms a purple layer underneath the pieces. Playrix’s official image shows it as a smooth, glossy purple square with a pale border and rounded corners. Look for that purple surface to see which spaces are already covered.

Your goal is to spread Jam over every required space. It stays underneath the colored pieces as they move around the board.

That’s why the objective counter can look so high. You don’t need to collect dozens of jars or destroy that many objects. The number tells you how many spaces still need Jam.

How Does Jam Spread?

According to Playrix’s official description, Jam spreads when you make matches using pieces that are already on it. The uncovered spaces included in the match become covered too.

For example, a three-piece match that includes one piece on Jam can spread it to the uncovered spaces beneath the other pieces. A match made entirely outside the purple area has no Jam to spread.

The same principle applies to power-ups: Playrix says activating boosters and power-ups on Jam helps spread it. Its description also notes that even the Shovel can help.

The Catch With Two Super Rainbow Blasts

Combining two Super Rainbow Blasts produces such a huge effect that you might expect it to finish the Jam objective in one move. After all, Playrix’s official description says the combination clears the entire board twice.

But clearing the board doesn’t automatically cover it with Jam. The position of the power-ups still matters.

If both Super Rainbow Blasts are on uncovered spaces, combining them can clear pieces across the board without spreading the Jam. The effect reaching a purple space isn’t enough. At least one of the two Super Rainbow Blasts needs to be on a space already covered with Jam.

What We Observed in Our Gameplay

During our Grand Trophy run, we played a board with Garden Shelf, Statue, Vase, and Jam. Two Super Rainbow Blast combinations in the same video show why their position matters.

First Combination: Neither Power-Up Was on Jam

At around 0:37–0:40, we combined two Super Rainbow Blasts on the left side of the board. Neither was on Jam. The purple layer was still confined to the horizontal strip along the bottom.

The board cleared, but the Jam didn’t spread across it. The objective counter stayed at 82 spaces remaining.

That was what caught our attention: if the combination hit the entire board, why didn’t everything turn purple? Neither power-up was on Jam when we combined them—a detail that fits Playrix’s explanation of how it spreads.

Final Combination: On the Jam

Near the end of the same game, at around 2:08–2:10, only two spaces remained uncovered. This time, we combined two Super Rainbow Blasts near the bottom of the board, on the Jam.

The combination covered the last two spaces and completed the objective. Comparing those two moments makes the difference easy to see: the same powerful combination, with a different result for the Jam.

How to Spread Jam More Effectively

  • Start at the purple area. Look for matches that include pieces on Jam and reach into uncovered spaces.
  • Check underneath your power-ups. Before using them to spread Jam, make sure they’re on it.
  • Watch the objective counter after big combinations. It tells you how many new spaces were covered, even when the effects make the action hard to follow.
  • Find the last uncovered spaces. Once most of the board is purple, focus on the spots that still need coverage.

Before You Combine Rainbow Blasts, Look Underneath

Jam asks you to look closely at the board, including what’s beneath the pieces. A powerful combination can clear the board without bringing you any closer to finishing the Jam objective.

The key is having Jam beneath at least one of the power-ups. Before combining two Super Rainbow Blasts to turn the board purple, check where they’re sitting. That quick glance can determine whether the move spreads Jam or simply clears pieces.

The fireworks can wait one second. Check underneath first—even two Super Rainbow Blasts need the right starting spot.
