How to Unlock New Areas in Gardenscapes: Stars, Days and Garden Progress Explained

A cheerful inventor guides new Gardenscapes players from a match-3 board to a Star, garden tasks, and an open gate leading to a new garden area.

This guide for new Gardenscapes players explains how garden areas unlock, how Stars and game days work, and why level progress is separate from garden progress.

New garden areas in Gardenscapes do not open simply because you reach a certain match-3 level. The garden has its own progression system. You earn Stars by beating levels, spend those Stars on restoration and story tasks, finish the current game days, and eventually unlock the next part of the garden.

That basic loop is already visible in the opening levels. The early garden progress system makes it clear that winning levels and restoring the garden are connected, but they are not the same thing. You can keep beating levels while leaving garden tasks unfinished.

How Do New Garden Areas Unlock?

Gardenscapes opens its garden areas one at a time. You normally cannot choose a locked area farther ahead and start restoring it whenever you want. First, you have to finish the work connected to your current area.

Each area contains a series of tasks spread across several game days. These can include cleaning, repairs, planting, decorating, conversations, and story events. Most of them require Stars.

The basic progression works like this:

  • Beat match-3 levels.
  • Earn Stars.
  • Spend Stars on garden tasks.
  • Finish the tasks for the current game day.
  • Continue through the remaining days in the area.
  • Complete the area and move on to the next one.

Playrix says garden areas are unlocked one after another, so there is no standard way to skip several unfinished areas and jump directly to a later one.

How Long Does It Take to Finish a Garden Area?

According to Playrix, it usually takes about three to five game days to complete the tasks in one area and fully restore it.

Those are game days, not real-world days. A player can complete several game days in one sitting if enough Stars have been saved. Another player may stay on the same garden day much longer while playing events, replaying difficult levels, or simply choosing not to spend Stars yet.

This means two players can spend very different amounts of real-world time in the same area even though the area itself contains roughly the same sequence of story tasks.

🧭 Quick Tip

How Many Stars Do You Need to Unlock the Next Area?

There is no single Star cost for unlocking an entire garden area. Instead, Stars are spent on the individual tasks that make up each game day.

Playrix currently states that a task can require up to five Stars. Some jobs also have more than one stage, so restoring a single object or completing one part of the story can involve several separate steps.

The total number of Stars you need therefore depends on all the tasks that must be completed before the area is finished.

You also do not have to spend Stars as soon as you earn them. You can keep playing match-3 levels, build up a large Star balance, and return to the garden later.

Do You Have to Reach a Certain Level to Open a New Area?

There is an important difference between your match-3 level and your position in the garden story.

Beating another level gives you a Star, but that win does not automatically complete a garden task. If you continue playing levels without spending your Stars, your level number can keep rising while your garden stays exactly where you left it.

So there usually isn't a single rule such as “reach Level 100 and the next garden area opens.” The next area opens through garden progression: complete the required tasks and game days, and then continue into the next section.

This also explains why two players who are relatively close in level number may not be in the same garden area.

What Is the Complete Day Option?

Players who save Stars do not always have to open the tablet and complete every remaining task one by one.

If you have enough Stars saved, Gardenscapes may offer the Complete Day option, which lets you finish all remaining tasks for that game day at once. The tablet shows how many Stars are required before you confirm it.

Playrix currently says this feature is available to players at Level 18 or higher who have reached the treehouse expansion.

Using it does not let you skip the normal garden sequence. It simply gives you a faster way to spend saved Stars and finish the current day.

Why Is the Next Garden Area Not Opening?

If you think you should already have access to the next area, check the tablet in the bottom-left corner of the screen first. That is where Gardenscapes shows your current tasks and garden progress.

In most cases, the current area is not completely finished yet. You may still have a task waiting, need more Stars, or have additional work left in the current game day.

Having plenty of completed match-3 levels does not change that. If you have been saving Stars instead of using them, your match-3 progress can be far ahead of your garden progress.

Some tasks also take time to complete. Playrix says certain timed tasks can be sped up with coins, although spending coins to speed them up is not required for normal garden progression.

What If There Are No Garden Tasks Left?

There is one very different situation that can affect players who have progressed far into the story.

If the tablet has no new tasks at all, Playrix says this may mean you have completed all the garden tasks currently available in the game. In that case, there is no hidden task you need to find. You have reached the end of the garden content released so far and must wait for additional tasks in a future update.

If you are not at the end of the available content and your tasks disappear unexpectedly, Playrix recommends contacting support.

How Do You Check Your Current Garden Progress?

The in-game tablet is the main place to check what still needs to be done. It shows the tasks connected to your current garden day and lets you spend Stars to complete them.

This is the first place to look if you are unsure why another area has not opened. Instead of focusing only on your match-3 level number, check whether the current garden tasks are actually finished.

How Do You Return to Older Garden Areas?

Opening a new area does not remove the ones you have already restored.

As the garden expands, a Map becomes available inside the tablet. Playrix says the Map is available after the Picnic area has been restored and the second expansion has been unlocked.

Open the tablet, select the Map tab, and choose the expansion you want to visit. Austin's icon moves to the selected area to show your current location.

The first and second expansions can also be reached through the yellow arrow near the bridge connecting the Picnic and Guest House areas.

Can You Skip an Area and Come Back Later?

You can stop doing garden tasks whenever you want and spend your time on match-3 levels, events, teams, collections, or other parts of the game. What you normally cannot do is bypass an unfinished garden area and start restoring a later one.

The areas follow a sequence, and completing your current progression is what opens the next section.

This progression is separate from many of the other systems Gardenscapes gradually introduces. Teams, events, passes, expeditions, and other features can become available even while your garden story continues at its own pace.

Match-3 Progress and Garden Progress Are Not the Same

This is probably the most important point for a new player.

Your match-3 level tells you how many regular levels you have beaten. Your garden progress tells you how far you have moved through the restoration and story tasks. The two systems are connected by Stars, but they do not automatically move forward at the same pace.

You can beat dozens of levels, save the Stars, and leave the garden untouched. Later, you can return to the tablet and complete several tasks or even several game days in a short period of time.

That is why reaching a higher level does not always make a new garden area appear immediately.

What Should You Do If You Want to Open the Next Area?

The process is simple once you separate the two types of progress.

Beat levels to earn Stars. Open the tablet and complete the remaining tasks. Finish the current game day, continue through the rest of the area's days, and keep going until that part of the garden is complete.

As you move forward, remember that garden progression is different from the game's level-based unlocks, which can introduce teams, events, passes, expeditions, and other features while your garden story progresses separately.

If the next area still has not opened, the reason is usually somewhere in your current task list rather than in your level number.

Gardenscapes does not require you to discover a secret entrance or reach a hidden level requirement. For normal garden progression, you simply finish the area you are already restoring, and the next one opens as the story moves forward.
