Learn how the Fishing Float works in Gardenscapes, where it appears, how it moves, how to collect it, and the best strategies for clearing it efficiently.

The Fishing Float is one of Gardenscapes' oldest moving objectives. It has no layers and does not stay in one place for long. It appears on water tiles and, if it is not collected, relocates every two moves.

That is why reading the board before your first move matters so much in levels with Fishing Floats. The water tiles show you right away where the element can appear and which parts of the board it can relocate to.

Which tiles can it appear on?

Playrix states that Fishing Floats move to random water tiles. That means they cannot appear just anywhere on the board. The water area determines the positions available to the element.

If a level has only a small water area, the number of possible positions is limited. On a larger or divided water section, the Float may reappear in a completely different part of the board after it moves.

It does not travel from tile to tile or follow a set direction. Instead, it simply disappears from its current position and reappears on another available water tile.

How do you collect a Fishing Float?

The basic method is to make a match next to it using pieces that are the same color as the Float.

For example, if the Fishing Float is red, you need a red match next to it. A red match somewhere else on the board will not collect it.

There are no layers to remove. One valid hit is enough.

Power-ups and in-level tools

The Float can also be collected when it is hit by a nearby power-up. This is especially useful when the current piece layout does not give you an easy same-color match.

It also interacts directly with in-level tools. That can make a big difference when only a few moves remain and the last Float is sitting in an awkward position.

A well-timed chain reaction can be particularly effective because one explosion may collect the Float while also making progress on other objectives.

What happens every two moves?

If the Float is not collected, it relocates to another random water tile after two moves. This is the mechanic that defines the element and can shape the entire strategy of the level.

The Float essentially “dives” under the water and comes back up somewhere else. It does not disappear from the objective. It is simply being moved to a new position.

The most important trick: don't always chase its current position

If there is an easy match next to the Float, it usually makes sense to collect it right away. But if creating the right match would take several setup moves, you may be better off focusing on something else for the moment.

By the time you finish building a complicated setup, the Float may already have moved. Spending several moves trying to create one specific match around its current position can easily turn into wasted effort.

Sometimes relocation works in your favor

Random movement is not always a disadvantage. If the Float is stuck in an awkward spot with no useful pieces or power-ups nearby, you can sometimes let it move instead of trying to force a solution.

During those two moves, you can open up the board, create a power-up, or make progress on another objective. The Float may reappear in a much easier position.

Look at the entire water area first

In a Fishing Float level, do not focus only on where the element is sitting right now. Identify all the water tiles first because those are the positions it may move to later.

On a board with only a few water tiles, its movement is easier to anticipate. The more possible positions there are, the less useful it becomes to build your strategy around one exact location.

Same-color matches and explosions follow different rules

  • Normal match: the match must use the correct color and happen next to the Float.
  • Power-up: the Float is collected when the explosion affects it.
  • In-level tool: a tool can be used directly when you need an immediate solution.

This difference explains why some matches next to the Fishing Float do nothing even though they appear to touch it.

When was the Fishing Float added to Gardenscapes?

The Fishing Float appeared very early in the game's history. Archived notes for Version 1.8.0 record its introduction in September 2017.

In older notes, it was simply called the Float. The same update also added 150 new levels.

On September 21, 2017, Gardenscapes Official published a tutorial titled “How to deal with the Float?”, showing that the mechanic was one of the newer Match-3 features at the time.

First appearance in Level 851

The Gardenscapes Wiki lists Level 851 as the earliest documented appearance of the Fishing Float.

Many older Gardenscapes levels have changed over the years, so Level 851 is best treated as the earliest documented appearance, not as proof that today's version of the level is identical to the one players saw in 2017.

One of Gardenscapes' earliest roaming mechanics

In October 2017, Liquid & Grit used the Gardenscapes Float as an example of a “Roaming” mechanic. Unlike a fixed blocker, the objective stayed in one position temporarily and then moved somewhere else if it had not been collected.

That behavior is what still makes the Fishing Float interesting today. The challenge does not come from durability. It comes from timing and move management. In levels with limited moves, deciding whether to collect it immediately, build a power-up, or wait for a better position is closely tied to how you use your remaining moves.

Useful tips

  • Identify all water tiles before you start playing.
  • Keep track of the two-move relocation cycle.
  • Collect a Float immediately when an easy same-color match is available.
  • Do not spend several moves setting up a match around a position that is about to change.
  • Use power-ups when the right color is difficult to place next to the Float.
  • Let the Float relocate when its current position is especially difficult.
  • Look for moves that also make progress toward another objective.
  • Save in-level tools for difficult final positions or the last few moves of the level.

Conclusion

The Fishing Float is easy to understand once you know how it works, but its movement changes the way you approach the board. It appears on water tiles, needs only one valid hit, and relocates every two moves if it is still on the board.

The key is not to chase it every time it moves. Instead, know when to collect it immediately and when your moves are better spent elsewhere while you wait for a more favorable position.
