Magic Hat is a Gardenscapes element that takes three hits to release a Hot-Air Balloon. See how the Magic Hat, Hot-Air Balloons, match-3 hits, and power-ups work.

Over the past month, several new elements have appeared in the latest Gardenscapes levels. The game continues to introduce new mechanics and different ways for players to interact with the board, and one of these elements is the Magic Hat, which produces Hot-Air Balloons.

How the Magic Hat Works

The element initially appears on the board as a Magic Hat. To activate it and produce a Hot-Air Balloon, the hat must receive a total of three hits.

Those hits can come from match-3 combinations made next to the Magic Hat or from power-ups that hit it.

After the first hit, the Magic Hat remains on the board but moves into its next stage. As it takes more hits, a visible glow begins to appear around it, showing that it is getting closer to producing a Hot-Air Balloon.

On the third hit, the Magic Hat activates and a Hot-Air Balloon comes out of it.

The Magic Hat has a mechanic that feels similar to the Candy element. In both cases, the object stays on the board while it receives several hits and gradually moves through different stages before producing or revealing its final result.

The Hot-Air Balloons Are the Actual Level Goal

An important detail is that the Magic Hat itself is not the final objective. Its purpose is to generate the Hot-Air Balloons that the player needs to remove from the board.

Once a Hot-Air Balloon appears, it can be cleared with either a match-3 combination or a power-up.

In levels that use this element, the Hot-Air Balloons are part of the level objective. This means players first have to hit the Magic Hats enough times to produce the required Hot-Air Balloons and then clear those balloons from the board.

🧭 Quick Tip

Three Stages Before the Hot-Air Balloon Appears

The Magic Hat's behavior can be broken down into three simple stages:

  1. The Magic Hat appears on the board in its initial state.
  2. As it takes hits, it changes appearance and begins to glow.
  3. On the third hit, the Magic Hat produces a Hot-Air Balloon.

This creates a two-step challenge within the level. Simply hitting the element once is not enough. Players have to spend moves or use well-positioned power-ups to activate the Magic Hat, and then they still need to clear the Hot-Air Balloon it produces. This kind of design is becoming more common as Gardenscapes introduces mechanics with several stages instead of obstacles that can be dealt with in a single step.

Another New Mechanic in Recent Gardenscapes Levels

The Magic Hat is another addition during a period in which Playrix has introduced an unusually large number of new elements into the latest Gardenscapes levels. In a relatively short time, players have encountered several new mechanics with different hit requirements, multiple stages, and new ways of generating or removing objects from the board.

What makes the Magic Hat interesting is that it combines two separate tasks. First, you have to activate the hat so that the Hot-Air Balloon appears. Then you have to clear the Hot-Air Balloon itself. With mechanics that require repeated hits, power-ups become especially important because they can help advance the element through its stages while also affecting nearby objectives. In other words, some of your moves go toward creating the level objective before you can even start removing it.

Magic Hat and Hot-Air Balloons

The mechanic is straightforward: make three matches next to the Magic Hat to produce a Hot-Air Balloon. Power-ups can also hit the Magic Hat and help move it through its stages.

Once the Hot-Air Balloon appears, the player still needs to remove it from the board to complete the level objective.
