Energy Spheres are one of the more unusual match-3 elements in Gardenscapes. They are not standard obstacles that you simply clear, and they are not usually a level goal on their own. Instead, they charge as you make matches or trigger power-ups next to them. Once they are fully charged, every Energy Sphere on the board activates at the same time.

Energy Spheres have been in the game for several years, but they are still active in Gardenscapes and continue to appear in endgame levels.

What Are Energy Spheres?

Energy Spheres appear in fixed spots on the board, and like many other Gardenscapes elements, their behavior depends on how you interact with the board around them. What makes Energy Spheres different is that they work as one shared energy system. You charge them by making matches or setting off power-ups next to any Sphere.

It takes four successful activations to fully charge the system. Those activations do not have to happen in four consecutive moves. Energy Spheres are not tied to a timer, and they do not automatically trigger after a set number of moves.

If the board gives you the right matches, you can fully charge the Spheres in four moves. If it does not, it may take much longer before you can complete all four activations.

All Energy Spheres Are Connected

This is the most important thing to understand about the element. If a level has several Energy Spheres, you do not need to charge each one separately.

Every Sphere on the board shares the same charge. You can make all four activations next to the easiest Sphere to reach, and the entire group will still charge together.

That can make a big difference on boards where some Spheres are trapped behind obstacles or placed in hard-to-reach areas. You do not always need to open up the whole board before they can become useful.

What Do Energy Spheres Hit?

Once the charge is complete, all Energy Spheres activate at the same time. Each Sphere pulses and hits all eight adjacent tiles around it, including the four diagonal tiles, along with whatever those tiles contain.

This means an activation can damage or affect pieces, obstacles, or level objectives in any of the eight positions immediately surrounding each Sphere.

Energy Spheres also work very differently from the Rainbow Blast. They do not affect an entire color across the board, and they do not fire at distant targets. Each Sphere acts locally, but several Spheres can affect different areas of the board at the same time.

Why Are Energy Spheres Useful?

Energy Spheres are especially useful when they are sitting next to obstacles that would otherwise take several moves to clear.

If Spheres are spread across the board, charging one can help you hit several areas at once. The idea is similar to other charge-based power-ups: filling the charge is only useful if the final activation helps clear something you actually need. With Energy Spheres, a few good moves in one accessible area can create progress somewhere else too.

When Did Energy Spheres First Appear?

Energy Spheres first appeared in Level 7746, based on the earliest gameplay and community records we could find.

Gardenscapes community databases list Level 7746 as the first known level featuring the element, while gameplay from the same level was published under the name Energy Ball on February 18, 2021.

So the mechanic appears to have been introduced around February 2021.

Energy Ball or Energy Spheres?

Longtime players may remember the element as the Energy Ball. That name appears in older gameplay from the period when the mechanic was first introduced.

Today, the official Gardenscapes Help Center uses the name Energy Spheres. If you come across an older video or discussion that refers to the Energy Ball, it is usually talking about the same element.

Players Were Confused When It First Appeared

When Level 7746 first appeared, some players were not immediately sure how the new element worked.

In a player discussion from February 18, 2021, one user reported seeing Austin's tutorial without the explanatory text they expected. Later in the same discussion, players mentioned instructions telling them to make matches or explosions next to the Energy Ball.

This was not an official Playrix announcement, but it gives us a useful snapshot of how players first encountered the mechanic.

How Popular Are Energy Spheres?

There are no public statistics from Playrix showing how many players like or dislike Energy Spheres, and there is no large, reliable survey that ranks them among the most popular or most disliked Gardenscapes elements.

The element clearly attracted some attention when it first appeared, but that is not enough to measure its overall popularity.

Unlike some mechanics that regularly trigger strong complaints from players, Energy Spheres do not seem to have developed the same kind of negative reputation. At the same time, there is not enough evidence to call them one of the game's most popular elements either.

But you do not need to charge Energy Spheres every chance you get. The basic tiles on the board matter because the eight positions surrounding each Sphere determine how useful its activation will be. If those nearby tiles are already clear, or if your main objectives are somewhere else, another move may be more useful.
