Could the Gardenscapes Garden Pass become more important than levels? See how extra moves, seasons, rewards, and monetization may reshape gameplay.
The Garden Pass did not suddenly appear in the form we know today. Its first version launched in November 2019 with Furry Season under the name Golden Ticket. From the beginning, it used two reward tracks: one free and one premium.
Since then, the system has expanded far beyond a few extra boosters or coins. Today, the Garden Pass can provide eight lives instead of five, extra moves, premium rewards, the Bonus Bank, and other temporary benefits that directly affect how quickly and comfortably a player can progress.
That raises a bigger question about the future of Gardenscapes: will the Garden Pass remain an optional reward package, or could it eventually become more important than the levels themselves?
Gardenscapes will most likely remain free to play. The more important difference may be how easily different players can maintain their pace. As the game connects levels to seasons, events, competitions, and limited-time rewards, anything that reduces delays or protects progress becomes more valuable.
This is especially important when looking at why available moves run out so quickly. The Garden Pass does not need to make a player unbeatable. Even one or two extra moves can be enough to turn a failed level into a win.
From Golden Ticket to Garden Pass
The earliest version of today's Garden Pass appeared in November 2019 during Furry Season, the first Gardenscapes Season of Wonders. It included 30 stages and two reward tracks. Everyone could use the free track, while players who purchased the Golden Ticket with real money unlocked the premium rewards as well.
Those premium rewards included boosters, coins, and a special pet for the garden. Community discussions from early December 2019 also show players talking about the second reward track and the ability to leave certain timed boosters unclaimed until they were ready to use them.
The same basic system continued through later seasons, but it gradually became more useful. What began as an extra row of prizes developed into a package of benefits that could influence everyday gameplay.
The change from Golden Ticket to Garden Pass therefore reflected more than a new name. The feature had evolved from an optional reward ticket into a broader premium experience for the entire season.
What the Garden Pass Provides Today
According to the official Playrix Help Center, purchasing the Garden Pass can provide eight lives instead of five, a gold profile frame and gold-colored name, extra moves for difficult levels, Bonus Bank rewards, and a 50-coin gift for teammates.
These advantages are temporary. When the season ends, players return to five lives and lose the other seasonal benefits. Anyone who wants the same upgraded experience in the next season has to purchase the new Pass again.
That distinction is important. Players are not buying a permanent account upgrade. They are buying a more comfortable version of Gardenscapes for a limited period.
Once someone becomes used to more lives, extra moves, and a steady flow of premium rewards, returning to the free version may feel noticeably slower even though the basic game itself has not been locked behind a payment.
Why the Pass Now Affects More Than Levels
In the early years of Gardenscapes, the main progression loop was straightforward: beat match-3 levels, earn stars, and restore the garden.
Today, the same level can also contribute season points, Expedition energy, collection items, competition progress, team points, and progress in other active events.
A level is no longer just a puzzle. It has become the gateway to several systems at once.
That makes every gameplay advantage more valuable. If extra moves help a player save a difficult level, the benefit may extend beyond that one win. It can also mean more season progress, more energy, better event results, and fewer interruptions.
A loss can have the opposite effect. It may cost a life, break a streak, remove temporary advantages, and delay progress in several activities at the same time.
This is why the Garden Pass can become more influential without changing the basic rules of the levels themselves.
The Pass Can Behave Like a Subscription Without Being One
The Garden Pass is not officially a subscription. Each season is purchased separately, and players can skip it whenever they want.
Its structure, however, can create a similar habit. A new season begins, the previous benefits disappear, and the player has to decide whether to pay again to restore the upgraded experience.
A player normally buys coins when there is an immediate need. A Pass can be purchased at the beginning of a season before any particular problem appears.
That makes repeated purchases especially valuable from a business perspective. Playrix does not need players to sign up for an automatic monthly subscription if enough of them choose to buy the Pass again every season.
Why Season Progress Can Become the Priority
The garden can wait. A season cannot.
Garden areas and story progress are permanent. Seasons have deadlines. If players do not complete the reward track in time, some rewards disappear with the season.
That can change why someone continues playing. Instead of pushing through another level because they want to reach the next garden area, they may keep playing because they are close to the next premium reward.
This matters even more because events do not always appear the same way for every player. Playrix can test different durations, rewards, difficulty levels, or feature combinations with different groups.
The Garden Pass could therefore evolve gradually without every player seeing the same changes at the same time.
How the Garden Pass Could Become More Powerful
There is no official announcement that Playrix plans to make the Garden Pass more important than levels. However, there are several ways its value could increase without creating an obvious paywall.
- More extra moves: additional moves could appear more often on the premium reward track.
- Streak protection: Pass owners could keep a winning streak or active advantage after the first failed attempt.
- More life capacity: the current eight-life limit could eventually be combined with faster regeneration or greater storage.
- Faster event progress: the Pass could provide additional Expedition energy, event currency, collection items, or competition points.
- Premium missions: some objectives and rewards could become available only to Pass owners.
- Consecutive-purchase rewards: buying several Passes in a row could unlock an additional perk or stronger Bonus Bank.
- Closer Expedition integration: premium rewards could include larger energy packages or other Expedition advantages.
None of these changes would have to make normal levels impossible for free players. They would simply make the paid experience faster and more forgiving.
The Bigger Business Opportunity Is Convenience
The Garden Pass does not need to become pay-to-win to become much more important.
Playrix officially states that levels can be completed without purchases. That can remain true while the difference between free and premium play continues to grow in terms of time, attempts, and resources.
One player may wait for lives to refill, lose a streak, and replay the same difficult level. Another may have more lives, extra moves, and additional rewards available throughout the season.
Both can progress. The difference is how much friction they experience while doing it.
That is why the most realistic direction is not locking normal levels behind a payment. It is selling convenience: less waiting, more chances to rescue a level, fewer lost advantages, and faster progress through time-limited content.
The game remains free. The smoother version of the game becomes premium.
How the Garden Pass Affects Teams
The 50-coin gift for teammates is a small feature, but it adds a social element to the purchase. When a team member buys the Pass, other members can see the purchase and receive something from it.
Playrix could eventually expand that idea through team chests, shared bonuses, or rewards connected to the number of players with an active Pass.
That could create additional motivation to buy without directly requiring anyone to spend money.
This is also why experienced players manage coins, events, and boosters differently. A single advantage is rarely judged only by what it does in one level. Its value depends on how many other systems it can influence.
What This Means for Free Players
Free players will most likely continue to have access to the main levels, garden areas, and free event rewards.
The real challenge is more likely to be choosing where to spend time and resources.
A free player may need to be more selective about when to use boosters, when to spend coins, and which events are worth pursuing. Trying to complete every temporary event and collect every reward may become increasingly difficult without premium advantages.
The real divide would therefore not be between players who can play and players who cannot. It would be between players who can comfortably participate in almost everything and players who have to choose their priorities.
When Would the Pass Become More Important Than the Levels?
The Garden Pass would effectively become more important than the levels when players begin treating levels mainly as a way to complete the premium season.
Signs of that shift would include:
- the best rewards becoming increasingly concentrated on the premium track,
- extra moves regularly affecting level success,
- the Pass accelerating several events at once,
- the loss of Pass benefits becoming strongly noticeable,
- players treating the purchase as a normal part of every new season,
- the free experience feeling significantly slower.
The levels would still matter. They would remain the engine that produces progress. But instead of being the main destination, they could increasingly become the tool used to complete seasons and unlock rewards.
What to Watch in Future Seasons
The most important signal is not simply the price of the Garden Pass. It is the changing balance between the free and premium experiences.
More extra moves, stronger temporary perks, deeper connections with Expeditions and other events, or weaker free rewards would all increase the practical value of the Pass.
It will also be worth watching whether completing a season starts to require more levels, more daily play, or heavier use of coins and boosters.
The bigger picture is how the evolution of Gardenscapes connects with Playrix's revenue strategy. A small Pass change may appear insignificant by itself but become much more important when combined with additional events, more reward systems, and greater time pressure.
Conclusion
The Garden Pass began in November 2019 as the Golden Ticket during Furry Season and has since developed into one of the most important monetization systems in Gardenscapes.
It is not more important than the levels today. Levels still support the garden, the story, competitions, and most events.
What the Garden Pass can increasingly influence is the pace of all those systems.
The most likely future is not a Gardenscapes where players must pay to access normal levels. It is a Gardenscapes where the core game remains free, while more convenience, speed, and protection are attached to the Pass.
If that trend continues, the key question will no longer be whether a player can beat a level without paying. It will be whether a free player can keep up with seasons, events, and rewards at the same pace as someone with an active Garden Pass.
