Why Playrix Reuses Mini-Games in Gardenscapes

Discover why Playrix reuses mini-games in Gardenscapes, how mechanics can move between its games, and how events support player retention.

Gardenscapes is still a match-3 game at its core, but the game has expanded far beyond its regular levels. Over the years, Expeditions, merge events, and other mini-games have become a major part of the experience, sometimes feeling almost like separate games inside Gardenscapes.

What is interesting is that Playrix does not always build these mechanics exclusively for Gardenscapes. In some cases, this fits the broader way Playrix is expanding Gardenscapes: an idea is tested in another Playrix game first, refined there, and later brought into Gardenscapes in a different form.

Secret Ingredient Had Already Been Tested

One of the clearest examples is Secret Ingredient, a merge mini-game that appeared in Gardenscapes.

According to a Liquid & Grit analysis from March 2023, the same core mechanic had previously appeared in Homescapes under the name Austin's Childhood. It had already gone through multiple versions before making its way into Gardenscapes.

So a mini-game that feels completely new to Gardenscapes players may actually be based on an idea Playrix has already tested, adjusted, and improved somewhere else.

Why Reusing Mini-Games Makes Sense

Liquid & Grit points out one major advantage of this approach: Playrix can put more time and resources into developing a complex mini-game when that work can potentially be used across more than one title.

That helps explain why some newer events feel much more developed than the simple limited-time events of the past. They can have their own progression systems, resources, energy, objectives, and gameplay loops instead of being just another reward track attached to match-3 levels.

They Also Give Players Another Reason to Come Back

Liquid & Grit also connects these deeper mini-games to player retention.

A player may open Gardenscapes to beat a few levels, but at the same time they may be playing for event progress through an Expedition, a merge event, or another temporary activity. That creates another reason to return later instead of treating the game as nothing more than a series of match-3 boards.

Playrix Kept Pushing the Idea Further

By February 2024, Liquid & Grit was documenting even more ambitious mini-games in Homescapes, including Ranch Adventures and Pharaoh's Treasure, with deeper merge and simulation-style mechanics.

That led Liquid & Grit to suggest that Homescapes may sometimes serve as a testing ground for more complex ideas that could later be adapted for other Playrix games if they perform well.

There is no evidence that every successful Homescapes event will eventually show up in Gardenscapes. But Secret Ingredient proves that Playrix has already taken a tested mechanic from one game and reused it in another.

What This Could Mean for Gardenscapes

When a new mini-game appears in Gardenscapes, it may be worth checking what Playrix has already been doing in its other games. A mechanic that looks completely new may have already existed elsewhere under a different name, with different graphics, or in an earlier version.

This gives Playrix a way to keep expanding Gardenscapes without replacing the match-3 gameplay at its core.

So when the next unusual mini-game shows up in Gardenscapes, the most interesting question may be: where did Playrix test it first?
