Playrix does not present Cascades as a separate mechanic under that specific name. In its official guidance, it uses the term automatic match and even recommends making matches near the bottom of the board to increase the chances of creating one.
What Is a Cascade?
A cascade happens when a match clears pieces, the pieces above fall into the empty spaces, and the new layout automatically creates another match. If that happens again, the cascade can keep reshaping the board as the chain continues.
Move → Match → pieces fall → Automatic Match → more pieces fall → another Automatic Match.
The cascade ends once the board settles and no more automatic matches are created.
Why Do Matches Near the Bottom Matter?
When we make a match near the top of the board, only a small number of pieces may need to move. A match lower down can cause several rows above it to fall, creating many more new combinations and more chances for automatic matches.
This is not just a general match-3 strategy. Playrix itself recommends making matches near the bottom of the board to increase the chances of getting an automatic match.
That does not mean a lower move is automatically the better move. Playing low on the board is useful when it also helps us make progress toward the level objective.
Can a Cascade Create a Power-Up?
Yes. Falling pieces can line up into matches of more than three identical pieces. When that happens, an automatic match can create a power-up without costing the player another move.
- 4 matching pieces: Firecracker
- 5 matching pieces: Bomb
- 6 matching pieces: Dynamite
- 7 or more matching pieces: TNT
So a move that starts as a simple match can end with a new power-up sitting on the board, giving that one move much more value than the original match alone.
Can a Power-Up Start a Cascade?
Yes. A Bomb, Dynamite, or TNT explosion can clear a large number of pieces at once. The pieces above then fall into the empty spaces, and the new layout may create one or more automatic matches.
Power-Up → Explosion → pieces fall → Automatic Match → another reaction.
Cascades and Combos Are Not the Same Thing
A Cascade mainly comes from pieces falling into new positions and creating automatic matches.
A Combo or power-up chain involves one power-up triggering another. For example, an explosion may set off a second power-up, which can then trigger another reaction.
The two mechanics can still become part of the same sequence:
Match → Cascade → Power-Up created → Explosion → pieces fall → another Cascade.
Why Are Cascades So Valuable?
The biggest advantage of a cascade is simple: it lets one move do more work. In a level with a limited number of moves, every automatic match gives us extra progress without taking another move off the counter.
A useful cascade can clear pieces, hit obstacles, open up another part of the board, or create a power-up. One move can sometimes accomplish what would otherwise take two or more.
Cascades and the Rainbow Blast
A Cascade does not charge the Rainbow Blast just because automatic matches are happening. According to Playrix, the Rainbow Blast is charged by power-up explosions.
Cascades can still help indirectly by creating new power-ups. When those power-ups are later used, their explosions contribute to charging the Rainbow Blast.
Can We Predict a Cascade?
Sometimes we can predict the first part of one. If we look at the pieces directly above the match we are about to make, we can often see where those visible pieces will land after the spaces below them are cleared.
After that, things become less predictable. As the chain continues and new pieces enter the board, it becomes harder to know exactly what will happen next.
So Cascades involve both strategy and uncertainty. We cannot control the entire chain, but we can make moves that give a cascade a better chance to develop.
A Bigger Cascade Is Not Always Better
The size of the chain reaction is not the only thing that matters. A cascade can clear a large section of the board without making much progress toward the actual level objective.
That is why the best cascade is not necessarily the biggest one. The most useful cascade is the one that helps us get closer to completing the level.
How to Use Cascades More Effectively
- When two moves look equally useful, consider the lower match.
- Look at which pieces will fall after the move.
- Favor cascades that help the level objective instead of simply clearing a large area.
- Watch for falling pieces that could create a power-up.
- Judge a move by everything it can accomplish, not just the first match it creates.
